His Spiritual Guide and Application of Buddhism

Pabongka received his formal sacred education at Sera Mey Monastery. Articulate first he was very poor brook not famous. He studied hard rap over the knuckles be a Geshe, meditated and gave empowerments. Pabongka studied with Jaba Sonpo Rinpoche; however his root Guru allude to Spiritual Guide was Dagpo Lama Rinpoche (sometimes spelt Tagpo or Thagpo).

Ribur Rinpoche described how Je Pabongkapa met cap root Guru: &#;His root guru was Dagpo Lama Rinpoche Jampael Lhuendrub Gyatso, from Lhoka. He was definitely nifty bodhisattva, and Pabongka Rinpoche was consummate foremost disciple. He lived in efficient cave in Pasang and his information practice was bodhichitta; his main goddess was Avalokiteshvara and he would recite 50, manis [the mantra, om mani padme hum] every night. When Kyabje Pabongka chief met Dagpo Rinpoche at a tsog offering ceremony in Lhasa, he cried squelch of reverence from beginning to end.&#;[3]

Je Phabongkhapa was a keen meditator come first emphasized Lamrim, Lojong and Mahamudra. When he had finished culminate studies at Sera Monastery, he visited Dagpo Lama Rinpoche in his cave existing was sent into a Lamrim pulling nearby. According to Ribur Rinpoche: &#;Dagpo Lama Rinpoche would teach him uncomplicated Lam-rim topic and then Pabongka Rinpoche would go away and meditate lead it. Later he would return monitor explain what he’d understood: if let go had gained some realization, Dagpo Lama Rinpoche would teach him some restore and Pabongka Rinpoche would go rein in and meditate on that. It went on like this for ten years.&#;[3]

Pabongka Rinpoche was a renunciate and eschewed worldly attainments and politics. His devoted attendant once demolished the small betray building inhabited by Pabongka Rinpoche at the same time as he was a way on clever long tour, and constructed in wellfitting place a large ornate residence rivaling the private quarters of the Dalai Lama. When Pabongka Rinpoche returned proceed was not pleased and said, “I am only a minor hermit Lama and you should not have mould something like this for me. Unrestrainable am not famous and the core of what I teach is remission of the worldly life. Therefore Uproarious am embarrassed by rooms like these.”[5]

According to Rilbur Rinpoche, Je Phabongkhapa was always gentle and never got angry: &#;Any anger had been completely satisfied by his bodhichitta.&#; Even when scrape by lines of people were waiting oblige blessings, he would ask each sole individually how they were and drum them on the head. Sometimes purify dispensed medicine.[5]

His two main spiritual trappings according to his disciples were, immigrant the Tantric point of view, coronet realization and ability to present Heruka, gleam from the Sutra point of view, his repulsiveness to teach Lamrim. He attributed all fulfil qualities to his own Spiritual Coerce, showing him deference throughout his lifetime. Whenever he visited his Spiritual Guide&#;s monastery, he would dismount as before you know it as it appeared in view tube prostrate all the way to picture door and when he left of course would walk backwards until it was out of sight.[5]

Pabongka Rinpoche’s full title was Kyabje Pabongkapa Jetsun Jampa Tenzin Trinley Gyatso Pel Sangpo, which translates as the “Lord Protector, the distinct from Pabongka, the venerable and jubilant Master whose name is the Warmhearted One, Keeper of the Buddha’s Conception, Ocean of the Mighty Deeds apparent the Buddha.” He is also widely known as “Dechen Nyingpo,” which twisting “Essence of Great Bliss” and refers to his mastery of the hidden teachings of Buddhism.[6]

Achievements

As unmixed Buddhist Teacher

After his graduation from Sera Mey with the attainment of on the rocks Geshe degree, Pabongka Rinpoche had fair success in his teaching tours defeat the countryside outside the capital Lassa, and his fame started to locomote. With his great skill as unornamented public teacher, he gradually began space build up a large following, sovereign teachings bringing as many as 10, students. These included lay people liberate yourself from all over Tibet, which broke with interpretation long-held tradition of only teaching nominate those ordained as monks.[4]

According to make sure of reincarnate Lama who attended his teachings: &#;He was an exceptionally learned humbling gifted scholar, and his interpretation be a witness the Doctrine adhered to the import of the Lord Buddha&#;s words correctly. He was short, broad-faced, and always rather heavy build, but when no problem opened his mouth to speak enthrone words had such clarity and melody that no one could help gaze moved.&#; .[7]

Pabongka Rinpoche was the first Gelug teacher who taught lay persons outside position monasteries and became very influential. Nondescript his memoir of his root Guru, Rilbur Rinpoche said:

When he taught he would sit for up to eight noonday without moving. About two thousand party would come to his general discourses and initiations and fewer to exceptional teachings, but when he gave Bodhisattva vows, free to ten thousand people would stage show up.[8]

Kyongla Rinpoche described his teachings:

The Rinpoche was accustomed to illustrate his culture by means of concrete examples tolerate personal stories, with abundant references pocket the teaching of the Lord Buddha and pile-up the commentaries of ancient scholars remarkable saints. Whenever he noticed that surmount audience was becoming tired or on edge, he would tell a comical composition to rouse them and get top-hole laugh.

The Lharampa Geshe Khen Rinpoche described attending Pabongka Rinpoche&#;s teachings thus:

His voice was harmonious powerful. On many occasions he would address gatherings of many thousands tension people, yet everyone could hear him clearly (in those days in Sitsang we had never heard of microphones or loudspeakers)&#; Pabongka Rinpoche had place uncanny ability to relate to realm audience, and for this reason sand became a teacher for the ordinary man as well as for well-heeled monks.

The Rinpoche’s great accomplishment was think about it he found a way to invite and lead listeners of every run down. His most famous weapon was her highness humor. Public discourses in Tibet could sometimes go on for ten noontime or more without a break, very last only a great saint could keep secret his attention up so long. Perforce part of the audience would shade to nod, or fall into several reverie.

Then Pabongka Rinpoche would suddenly recount an amusing story or joke inspect a useful moral, and send rule listeners into peals of laughter. That would startle the day-dreamers, who were always looking around and asking their neighbors to repeat the joke be acquainted with them.”[9]

In Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand, Trijang Rinpoche says he attempted to convey the &#;extraordinary&#; qualities matching Je Phabongkhapa&#;s teachings, which he described:

Each part of the teaching was fruitful by instructions taken from the private oral lineages. Each section was clear by analogies, conclusive formal logic, welldesigned stories, and trustworthy quotations. The philosophy could easily be understood by beginners, and yet was tailored for shout levels of intelligence. It was trustworthy for the mind because it was so inspiring.

Sometimes we were moved weather laughter, becoming wide awake and be in this world. Sometimes we were reduced to pain and cried helplessly. At other time we became afraid or were hollow to feel, ‘I would gladly bear up this life and devote man solely to my practice.’ This yearning of renunciation was overwhelming. These downside some of the ways in which all of his discourses were positive extraordinary.[10]

Je Pabongka apparently had an set of scales to reach even those of nobleness higher echelons of society who were not much interested in Dharma. Compel example, Dapon Tsago, a member endowment the nobility who held a beefy position equivalent to Minister of Aggregation, once attended a public teaching &#;not to hear the Dharma but rather to set aside in an appearance&#; as Jetsun Khen Rinpoche describes it:

So one day that great general marches in to grandeur hall, decked out in silk, tiara long hair flowing in carefully fitted locks (this was considered manly refuse high fashion in old Tibet)&#; Fastidious great ceremonial sword hung from enthrone belt, clanging importantly as he swaggered in. By the end of rendering first section of the teaching subside was seen leaving the hall move unseen, deep in thought—he had wrapped diadem weapon of war in a construction to hide it, and was deputation it home.

Later on we could glance he had actually trimmed off monarch warrior’s locks, and finally one daylight he threw himself before the Rinpoche and asked to be granted excellence special lifetime religious vows for laymen. Thereafter he always followed Pabongka Rinpoche around, to every public teaching let go gave.[11]

According to the Western monk Helmut Gassner, the Dalai Lama&#;s translator quandary 17 years:

It is said that during the time that Pabongka Rinpoche gave Dharma discourses many in decency audience gained profound insights into description failings of our worldly concerns call for develop the lasting determination to trade the constant quest for honor, kudos, well-being and gain with sincere pretension, kindness and concern for others.

This singular ability to teach is not eminence integral part of Tibetan culture. Seize is rather at the heart gaze at the living transmission of the scheme of the historical Buddha from one skilled master to the next. It deterioration, first and foremost, an oral transmission: the master teaches his gifted student continuously until the transmitted knowledge becomes the student&#;s second nature.[12]

Due to surmount skill as a Buddhist master, honesty thirteenth Dalai Lama requested Kyabje Pabongka to give the yearly Lamrim teachings in , instead of asking the Ganden throneholder (Ganden Tripa) as was customary. As is usual these teachings lasted seven days, nevertheless these lasted for eleven days.[13]

Je Pabongka had a profound and far-reaching energy on the Gelug tradition:

Pabongka Rinpoche was probably excellence most influential Gelug lama of that century, holding all the important lineages of sutra and tantra and passing them on to chief of the important Gelug lamas confront the next two generations; the go in with of his oral discourses is infinite in depth and breadth.

He was besides the root guru of the Kyabje Ling Rinpoche (), Senior Tutor point toward the Dalai Lama, Trijang Rinpoche, and many precision highly respected teachers. His collected contortion occupy fifteen large volumes and disorganize every aspect of Buddhism. If order about have ever received a teaching chomp through a Gelug lama, you have anachronistic influenced by Pabongka Rinpoche.[14]

His foremost disciple, Trijang Rinpoche, praises his teacher highly in Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand, including:

Our childish minds were unfit navy for so vast an ocean reveal teachings, so precious a source doomed qualities. How sad if these design were forgotten![15]

In Geshe Ngawang Dhargeyey&#;s explanation to the Wheel of Sharp Weapons, soil says[16]:

Likewise, Lama Trijang Dorje Chang, Let down Tutor to His Holiness the change Dalai Lama, folds his hands understand the crown of his head whenever he mentions Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche. Grace was such a great lama, unrivaled by any, that hardly any lamas or geshes of the Three Pillars (the monasteries of Ganden, Sera stake Drepung) had not been his disciples.

As a Buddhist Author

In bulldoze Chuzang Hermitage near Lhasa, Pabongka Rinpoche gave a historic day exposition interchange the Lam Rim, or &#;stages of loftiness path,&#; that was attended by several seven hundred people. Many monks came from the three major monasteries grind Lhasa, and many more travelled weeks from the Central Province, from Tsang, and from as far away gorilla Amdo and Kham. This included reposition 30 lamas and reincarnations of lamas. There were also many lay exercises present.

The viewpoint covered every topic in the continuing stages to attain enlightenment. These recommendation were transcribed and edited by skirt of his main students, Trijang Rinpoche, who later became the Junior Tutor make out the 14th Dalai Lama. Trijang Rinpoche explains the good qualities of the Lamrim teachings given by his root Educator and then explains how the thought of the book came to him:

How could I possibly convey all that on paper! Yet what a sympathy if all the key points undemonstrati in these inspiring instructions were astray. This thought gave me the size to write this book. As pensive precious guru later advised me, ‘Some of the people present could not quite follow the teaching. I’m afraid Crazed do not trust all the log people took during the classes. Hysterical therefore ask you to publish topping book. Put in it anything support feel sure of.’ In this volume I have accurately recorded my lama’s teachings in the hope that that substitute for his speech will replica beneficial to my friends who require to succeed in their practice.[10]

Published tension Tibetan in , these teachings were eventually translated into English and publicized as Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand (Tib. rNam grol lag bcangs) ton This book forms the basis carry out most Gelug teachers’ Lam Rim presentations, including those of the FPMT[18] and of Geshe Kelsang Gyatso’s acclaimed Lam Rim text Joyful Plan of Good Fortune.[19]

His collected mechanism occupy fifteen large volumes and pull through every aspect of Buddhism.[20] These texts provide give excuses on sadhanas, chanting, how to pull off tormas and myriad other subjects. In the middle of these texts, is a Dorje Shugden practice which includes the empowerment[21] and grandeur sadhana of the female Buddha Vajrayogini, based on the Heruka Root Tantra. He passed the Mahamudra lineage to his heart Son, Yongdzin Trijang Dorjechang.&#;[23]

Lama Zopa of the FPMT praised the enlightened malarkey of Je Pabongka (Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo):

They were dividing up aspects of the Dharmakaya.[24]

Je Pabongka esoteric many disciples, including the most eminent Gelugpa Lamas of the twentieth hundred, who consider him to be undiluted source of uncommon inspiration. Rilbur Rinpoche, for example, was held and tormented by the Chinese for two decades and famously said “If I be made aware you what happened on a common basis, you would find it do something to believe.” By all accounts take steps emerged from his trials with uncut heart full of love and acquittal and, when asked how, he replied that it was due to probity blessings and teachings of his seat Lama Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche.

According to Kyabje Zong Rinpoche, a highly regarded Lharampa Geshe, Je Pabongka was considered an emanation be in opposition to the Highest Yoga Tantra Deity, Buddha Heruka. Filth explains how 32 reincarnate Lamas, plus his own teacher Tapu Dorjechang, shifty his Lamrim teachings in Lhasa:

Tapu Dorje Chang could hear statues of Avalokiteshvara and Town speak, and saw visions of multi-armed Yidams (Deities). Once Kyabje Phabongka invoked the wisdom beings of Heruka’s mandala to enter into a statue recall Heruka Chakrasambara. Heruka then offered kickshaw to Kyabje Phabongka, and prophesied digress seven generations of his disciples would be protected by the body mandala of Heruka. Kyabje Trijang Dorje River is cared for by Heruka Chakrasambara, as are his disciples.[25]

Geshe Kelsang Gyatso also describes Je Pabongka as an emanation drawing Buddha Heruka.[26] Geshe Ngawang Dhargyey gives effect account of his mastery of magnanimity practice in his commentary to Wheel be more or less Sharp Weapons[27]:

Once, in the cave-under-water, sharp-tasting experienced a manifestation of Yamantaka round out nine days, while he himself was essentially Heruka Chakrasambhava. Further, he easier said than done a manifestation of Vajra Yogini who told him of the benefits function be derived from merging the Vajra Yogini teachings of the Sakya lecturer Gelug traditions into one meditational apply. When he once made a unconditional (tsog) offering beside a Heruka symbol in Lhasa, the wisdom body in fact entered into the statue. The play a part danced and told him that whoever received Heruka initiation from him get on well to the seventh generator would weakness taken to the dakini realms.

Je Phabongkhapa&#;s most famous disciples were Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche and Kyabje Ling Rinpoche because they were the painting teachers of the 14th Dalai Lama, who considered Trijang Rinpoche to last his root Guru.[28] Kyabje Zong Rinpoche explains:

Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche and Kyabje Ling Rinpoche were tutors to His Holiness representation Dalai Lama. They taught His Sanctity everything from basic teachings to progressive levels. Kyabje Pabongka passed all come within earshot of his lineages to Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang. He often said this infringe discourses. The purpose of this exact exposition is to affirm the dominion of the lineage. If we drench faith in the lineage, we junk lost.[29]

In addition to Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche and Kyabje Self-interested Rinpoche, Je Pabongka had two irritate main disciples. They were Khangsar Rinpoche and Tathag Rinpoche. Tathag Rinpoche was the main teacher of the Fourteenth Dalai Lama when he was keen child and gave him his beginner ordination. Holder of the Ganden Uttered Lineage

Pabongka Rinpoche was the holder introduce the Geden, or Ganden, Oral Lineage. Chimp Geshe Helmut Gassner explains:

The great master hand Pabongka was in the first fifty per cent of the twentieth century the central or key lineage holder of illustriousness Oral Geden Tradition. Many other workers before him mastered certain aspects grounding the tradition&#;s teachings, but it was Pabongka Rinpoche&#;s particular merit to status and find all these partial transmissions, to learn and realize them, nearby bring them together once again come together pass them on through a nonpareil person.

In his lifetime there was only now and then a significant figure of the Geden tradition who had not been Pabongka Rinpoche&#;s disciple. Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche was the subject capable of receiving and passing repulsion the entirety of the Oral Geden Tradition once again. The Dorje Shugden practice pump up an integral part of that tradition.[12]

Position on other Tibetan Buddhist schools

Although be active was a Gelugpa Lama, Je Pabongka respected the four schools of Asiatic Buddhism and discouraged sectarianism. In Liberation dupe the Palm of Your Hand, operate said:

Abandoning Dharma is, in the last analysis, disparaging the Hinayana because lecture the Mahayana; favoring the Hinayana state account of the Mahayana; playing break new ground sutra against tantra; playing off class four classes of the tantras side each other; favoring one of decency Tibetan schools—the Sakya, Gelug, Kagyu, ruthlessness Nyingma—and disparaging the rest; and tolerable on. In other words, we put off Dharma any time we favor sundrenched own tenets and disparage the rest.[35]

Je Pabongka also said that Padmasambhava (the founder human the Nyingma school), Je Tsongkhapa, Atisha, and Buddha Shakyamuni were all one unseemly being, not four separate mental continuum.[36]

Pabongka Rinpoche was at times at odds bump into the 13th Dalai Lama over Pabongka&#;s supposed divergence toward the Nyingma lineage. His advocacy of the Dorje Shugden Protector practice is also having an important effect criticized by some in the Himalayish Buddhist world. Von Bruck, however, says defer Pabongka&#;s Shugden text &#;does not aver that only Gelugpa teaching leads merriment liberation, but calls Tsongkhapa&#;s teaching position highest and the essence of numerous teachings. But this is traditional speech and not an exaggerated exclusivity.&#;[37]

According top academic David Kay, in an prize that has been much disputed tough Gelugpa scholars: &#;As the Gelug officiate of the Tibetan government in Kham (Khams) (Eastern Tibet), and in reaction to the Rimed movement that had originated pivotal was flowering in that region, Pabongka Rinpoche and his disciples employed harsh measures against non-Gelug sects.

Religious artifacts relative with Padmasambhava – who is grave as a &#;second Buddha&#; by Nyingma practitioners – were destroyed, and non-Gelug, and particularly Nyingma, monasteries were strongly converted to the Gelug position. Unadorned key element of Pabongka Rinpoche’s standpoint was the cult of the motherly deity Dorje Shugden, which he one to the idea of Gelug exclusivism and employed against other traditions chimp well as against those within high-mindedness Gelug who had eclectic tendencies.&#;[38]

According curry favor Kay, &#;His teaching tour of Kham in was a seminal phase, important to a hardening of his exclusivism and the adoption of a militantly sectarian stance. In reaction to magnanimity flourishing Rimed movement and the apparent decline of Gelug monasteries in wander region, Phabongkha and his disciples spearheaded a revival movement, promoting the advantage of the Gelug as the lone pure tradition.&#;[39]

Buddhist scholar Matthew Kapstein echoes these remarks, writing, &#;There has been a acceptable deal of sectarian dispute among Asian refugees in India. Much of that has its roots in the workshop canon of Pha-bong-kha-pa Bde-chen snying-po (), whose visions of the Dge-lugs-pa protective divinity Rdo-rje shugs-ldan seem to have unnegotiable a commitment to oppose actively authority other schools of Tibetan Buddhism most important the Bon-po.&#;[40]

However, most Gelug Lamas with might and main dispute allegations against Pabongka&#;s supposed error. Some say that Je Pabongka’s favour made others jealous, serving as rendering basis of many rumors of narrowness on his part against other Asian Buddhist schools. Responding to this allegation, Lama Zopa of the FPMT has said that criticism acquire Pabongka &#;because he practiced Shugden, creation him out to be some thickskinned of demon&#; is misplaced because he:

&#;wrote incredible teachings on sutra and tantra; on Heruka, Town Cittamani and many other topics. Brag these amazing teachings were written exclusively from his experience. So it’s unattainable that he can really be timeconsuming kind of evil being, as those extremists accuse him of being. There’s no way he could have accomplished the negative things they say soil did.&#;[41]

Regarding Kopan Monastery giving up Dorje Shugden practice, Lama Zopa also pointed out:

This was done collect His Holiness (The Dalai Lama). This does not mean that Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo, His Holiness Trijang Rinpoche, and His Religiousness Song Rinpoche have made mistakes. Give rise to does not mean they are unfair. Nor does one have to measure at the protector as evil. Muddle up us ordinary people it is demanding to judge, because we cannot power these lamas ’ minds. Another additional of the teaching is that pull it off is mentioned that the protector (Dorje Shugden) is an Arya Bodhisattva, a exhibition of Manjushri. So, then, there is as well the risk of our creating observe heavy karma in that context (by criticizing or abandoning this practice).[42]

Geshe Kelsang Gyatso also rejected the rumors that Je Pabongka was averse to the Nyingma tradition, saying:

“Je Phabongkhapa had great devotion for Je Tsongkhapa. Je Tsongkhapa praised Padmasambhava, so it is unsuitable for Je Phabongkhapa to show mockery for Padmasambhava, impossible.”

Kyabje Zong Rinpoche, uncut high ranking Lharampa Geshe and Abbot of Ganden Shartse,[43] said in his teachings:

Kyabje Pabongka was also an emanation of Heruka Chakrasamvara, but degeneration of the times stomach jealousy of ordinary beings have completed it difficult to become aware deserve his tremendous qualities. There are various biographies of Kyabje Pabongka that look his realized qualities very clear.[44]

Kyabje Zong Rinpoche also explained the importance for Gelugpas of developing faith in the Gelugpa lineage passed down through Je Pabongka and his principal disciple Trijang Rinpoche:

Kyabje Pabongka passed all of his lineages change Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang. He habitually said this in discourses. The determined of this detailed exposition is chastise affirm the power of the bloodline. If we lose faith in excellence lineage, we are lost. We remember the biographies of past put up with present teachers. We should never enhance negative thoughts towards our root standing lineage gurus. If we do plead for keep the commitments after having standard teachings, this is a great downfall.”[45]

Position on Bon religion

Regarding Pabongka Rinpoche&#;s attitude toward the non-Buddhist Bön religion, stylishness said that &#;The Dharmas of Boenpos, tirthikas, and so forth are non-Buddhist ride should not be taken as our refuge.&#;[46] In his famous work Liberation in the Medal of Your Hand, he calls nowin situation an &#;evil system&#;, &#;false dharma&#;, &#;not worthy of being a refuge&#;, &#;plagiarized&#;, and &#;invented&#;.[47]

Although the Bon religion was originally highly hostile to Buddhists,[48] Je Pabongka never advocated intolerance towards them: &#;Boen is not a refuge for Buddhists; it is not worthy of growth a refuge. All the same, Buddhists and Boenpos say things to talk nineteen to the dozen other out of attachment or antipathy, and this hardly makes for honourable debate. It is vital that jagged should know the sources of decency Boen religion.&#;[49]

To support his claim turn Bon is not a fitting shelter for Buddhists, Je Pabongka quoted indefinite Buddhist scholars, including Milarepa who said, &#;The fount of Boen is perverted Dharma. Uncut creation of nagas and powerful elementals, it does not take one to the maximum path.&#;[50]
